Variations of a Brother War ( Possibilities Triptych ) - 2

J. A. Tyler

Ghosts

What it meant to be a father was always reappearing. What it meant to be a father was holding the valley down between those hills. What it meant to be a father was touching the head on top of the shoulders and seeing the same head up on other shoulders. What it meant to be a father was holding the rifle out. What it meant to be a father was to roll walnuts in the mouth, hearing them bumble towards the ground, and sons. What it meant to be a father was to walk towards the war and not return.
