hymn 1

Valerie Witte

this limb folded as one part could regenerate another
not a leaf on it or this limb fell dead cup-like each acorn
must have fruit scattered seed that ugly dies don’t

look it’s so huge help identify home • build a driveway
the other side need root rot to preserve oak only
discovered in wind • how raccoon sweet or

slightly brittle body crawling bitter leaves most lack bristle
on lobe tips used to say wide as tall spilling in the neighbor
yard inside shell hairless • breach, the street, sprawling

on the car the roof a smooth margin flowers are catkins
in spring • jacob buried, joshua erected a stone under 300
years the life span of oaks now felled let me count the rings
