Saffron Locked Up/ In

Jenna Cardinale

The Gravier Street jail was important
for the business of hospitality
in the South. It's important
to keep the saffron locked
up at night.

It's not just the gamble— It's the real
numbers. This city was always
smooth, but never
made of milk.

Up against the levee's
thin breeze, free
women sell their daughters.
This old space upholds
traditions older than
color.
