Another Reason Mom's Not Welcome at the Wives' Club

Maureen Thorson

Cruising round this two-bit, shrimp-shucking town
in a baby pink Cadillac, she's a Mary Kay
award winner and a commodore's wife and
the springboard of a million cast-off doves
and it's mandatory, y'all, gonna give you junior
officers' wives a much needed lesson in how a lady
can wear a scarf to great effect. No kidding.
Mom stands, listening to this phone message
in her cinder-block kitchen, hands curdling round
a dish towel. "My husband's just home from
deployment and you want to teach me to tie a scarf?"
she mouths to no one. "Oh, hell. The hell you will."
