About the Poems

The "Getting Lucky" series consists of sonnets culled from the editorial copy of Lucky, a Condé Nast magazine about shopping and style. Each poem works on its own, and with the others, to examine the ways in which language is used in print journalism and advertising to sublimate specific ideas and tropes about the roles of modern women, as well as the culture of fashion. The series is also a tribute to the wily, insistent skills of contemporary copy writers.
