Deluxe And Amply-Rewarded Juliette

Carmen Giménez Smith

The Pope invents nihilism, then Juliette is born.
She gets wrapped in gossamer, sent away,
then escaped, then liberated through
submission, then cut, then spit, then subjected.
Bound to her excess by history,
we acquire the blood lease of her body
through her deference to utopian carnival
(our libido is constructed this way).
I can barely see her. Heavy with aura,
a libertine’s hazard, she’s just a visionary’s
invitation to nadir, faceless, naïve and dilated.
